In this Mastermind, you get the best of me, in a group setting, where you can be coached, mentored and guided by me and supported alongside other like-minded business owners and leaders. Learning Modules
Organisation Design: Hang on, designing what now, you say? Don’t be concerned, we aren’t taking an art class but we will start by talking about What is organisational design? Why is it important? And the reason why we start here when we are thinking about Building Your Team.
Like a house, to build a team you want it to be sustainable, align with your style and be commercially viable/affordable. If you are ready to build a team, or bring on a new team member, we start with a key exercise to determine what you require and how to design your people structure that will simplify and save you time and $ in the long run – without this step you could be stabbing in the dark! I’ll say it again, being clear up front on what you need before you hire someone will save you time and $ in the long run.
Policies, procedure and guidelines: You will hear me talk about Guidelines and we will touch on why I suggest a Guidelines versus policies approach. Guidelines can provide a more inclusive approach and can take into consideration different scenarios when you have engaging, considered and supportive guidelines for your business, rather than a restrictive, in a box, policy. Offering you suggestions, insights, trends, must-haves and nice to haves and how to manage your guidelines ongoing.
Job Descriptions: My number one go-to! The number one doc to have to create alignment between you and your team. This is such a key module for you to learn and implement immediately for your team, so they are clear on what they are responsible for. We will look at why is it so important to have a JD and how to write effective JDs. Getting this right is also a key step when preparing to hire.
Remuneration: where do we start when it comes to money and what to pay your team – there is so much more to learn about remuneration and salaries than just plucking a number from thin air (yes I have seen this happen!) We talk about how to get it right, what components make up a remuneration package, understanding salaries on a general sense, what impacts market movements and why it’s important to compare to market, how does economic shifts have an impact, when to take note of award changes and what is the minimum to pay – finishing with what do I have in the budget. This is also a great time to have a guest expert to support the practicalities of payroll – stay tuned!
Recruitment: this a big topic, hold tight while we dive deep into the options available when you are ready to bring someone onboard. What are the key steps to hiring effectively, inclusively and getting it right the first time? We will cover topics:
- Starting with gaining clarity on what you require with a job description (you will already have completed this module!)
- Advertising, knowing the best sourcing options for your biz, what to look for when shortlisting, how to phone screen applicants effectively and why is this an important step to do
- What additional testing options are there if this can help your process and how to know if is this relevant to you
- Reference checking and why an important step, through to the offer stage.
You might have thought we’ve missed interviewing, but as this is a big part of recruitment and a key skill to learn, we will take the time to look at this separately.
Interviewing: this deserves a whole module on its own! Interviewing is a skill to learn and practice, practice, practice. The candidate learning about your business and what you stand for, is just as important as you learning about their skills and experience. We will focus on what a typical interviewing approach can look like, what to cover, what to ask/what not to ask, how to be consistent and inclusive in your approach (and why this is important) and suggestions to ensure the right outcome and hire for your business.
